Al Rayah discussed in its Saturday editorial the election of the State of Qatar as a member of the Intergovernmental Committee of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

98 countries participated in the vote, where 59 countries voted for the State of Qatar to be along with eleven other countries members of the new four-year session. Today, half of the 24 members of the government committee were elected.

The paper said that this step showcases the confidence the international community has in Qatar, something that will give the country more drive to continue supporting projects promoting the goals of the convention ahead of hosting World Cup 2022. Al Rayah noted that the importance of this election is that its a confirmation of the confidence of the international community in the State of Qatar's ability to promote cultural diversity, both in the country and outside. It noted that that this level of confidence was reflected in the voting tally, which showed the international community's belief that the State of Qatar is fully committed to the Convention signed in 2005 to protect and promote the diversity of cultural expressions in a special framework for the formulation of policies and the identification of measures to promote the emergence of dynamic and creative cultural industries and markets throughout the world.

Al Rayah concluded by saying that Qatar's interest in cultural diversity stems from its conviction of its importance and the need to support it as an essential dimension of intercultural dialogue and an important factor for sustainable development. The importance of this diversity stems from the fact that it promotes human rights and belonging to the national identity, in return for full respect for other cultural identities coexisting in a single society.
