Hundreds of workers from various companies and expatriate communities took part in activities to mark Labour Day, organised by Qatar Foundation for Combating Human Trafficking (QFCHT), on Wednesday at Al Rayan Theatre in Souq Waqif.
The 600 participants were workers from Ras Laffan Industrial City, CICC, Mshaireb Real Estate and NKOM as well as Qatar-resident communities. The Philippine and Indian communities participated in the celebration through artistic shows.
The activities were organised in coordination with the Qatari House for Lodging and Human Care (QHLHC), and were aimed at highlighting the role of labourers in building the society; introducing the services QFCHT provides; and raising awareness among labourers about their rights and duties in relation to human trafficking.
“QFCHT launched the ‘Wayakum’ campaign this year for the first time to celebrate World Labour Day under the slogan, ‘Home is wherever you are sustained’. The campaign includes a variety of activities to raise awareness in the society about the role of labourers in contributing to building the state.
“The event implicitly holds a strong message from the entire society to the labourers, stressing the ethical and valuable commitment of protecting the rights of labourers. Through the ‘Wayakum’ campaign we stress that labourers are indeed our partners in development,” said Fatma Al Sahlawi, head of QHLHC.
The event included a variety of activities, including the screening of a movie, a silent show, sports competitions, and song and dance performances with the participation of the audience and with valuable prizes on offer.
The ‘Wayakum’ campaign, which was launched through this event, will continue throughout the year, with a host of activities that will stress the need to protect the rights of labourers.
