The State of Qatar participated, for the first time, in the proceedings of the first session of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women's (UN-Women) Executive Board
Addressing the session, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations H.E. Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani expressed Qatar's happiness to join the Executive Board of UN-Women, driven by the commitment of the State and its wise leadership to the issue of women empowerment and gender equality, which is reflected in the many achievements made by the State of Qatar in this field, at the national, regional and international levels.
Through its membership in the Board, and driven by the belief in the importance of the leading role played by the UN-Women in advancing the status of women, the State of Qatar will be keen to devote efforts to accelerating progress in meeting the needs of women and girls, and advancing the status of women around the world, Her Excellency said.
In light of the multiple challenges currently facing the world, women and girls must be placed at the center of the sustainable development plan, she said, underlining the importance of prioritizing the rights of girls and women to education, protection, and care, especially in conflict areas and areas affected by natural disasters.
In her speech before the Council, HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani expressed Qatar's aspiration to work and cooperate with the Executive Board of the UN-Women during the coming period in order to effectively contribute to the efforts aimed at advancing the status of women in all aspects of life and at all levels.
