geneva • The State of Qatar was elected here yesterday as deputy chairman of the new administration Council of the Universal Postal Union (upu) for Asia. This came in a voting session held on the sidelines of the 24th Congress now in session in the Swiss capital. The 41-member council representing Asia-Africa, America and Europe have elected four deputies to the administration council chairman for the four continents. Qatar also, for the first time, joined membership of the UPU administration council by election as part of the Asia and Oceania grouping. The CPU board consists of 41 elected countries as per various regional groupings. Ali Mohamed Al-Ali, chairman and director general of Qatar General Postal Corporation (Q-Post) said in a statement to Qatar News Agency that the election of Qatar as deputy chairman of UPU Council of Administration represents a new achievement for Qatar which is getting ready to host the 25th upu congress conference in 2012. Some 180 upu member states had backed hosting by Qatar of such a conference in view of the tremendous efforts made by the participating qatari delegation headed by Ali Al Ali.
