Qatar yesterday called on the Arab world to rally behind the international community to rescue the Syrian people, since the Syrian regime has crossed all limits with the use of chemical weapons against the civilians.
Addressing an extraordinary meeting of the Arab League representatives in Cairo, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the League, Ambassador Saif Mukadam Al Buainain, said the Syrian regime has crossed the red line and is fully responsible for the consequences.
“The use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime is against values, traditions and international law,” Al Buainain told the meeting dedicated to the Syrian issue. He called on the UN Security Council to act responsibly, protect the Syrian people and bring those who committed the crime to justice.
“We have been looking for a solution to the Syrian crisis over the past three years… By using chemical weapons, the Syrian regime has crossed the red line. Therefore, it is necessary to take quick practical action to stop this crime with Arab support to any international movement to save the Syrians,” he said.
The meeting made it clear that sessions would be open to the media so that the Arab public can know each member country’s stance on Syria. In a statement after the meeting, the League said those behind the chemical attack should face international justice, and called on UN Security Council members to overcome their differences and take action to end the killing there.
In Riyadh, Saudi Foreign Minister Saud Al Faisal said the international community must take a “decisive and serious” stand against the government of President Bashar Al Assad.
Meanwhile, US forces readied to strike Syria, as the West insisted its goal was not regime change but to punish the government for unleashing chemical warfare on civilians.
With military action seen as a near certainty and expected within days, Syria vowed to defend itself with what it dubbed “surprise” measures, while Russia and Iran warned that the use of force would have dire consequences.
US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said the US military was prepared to act if President Barack Obama gave the order — though White House aides said no final decision had been taken.
The White House said any US action would be to defend the principle that chemical weapons should not be used — and would not aim to topple Assad, despite previous calls for him to go.
