Qatar bans Chinese sweets amid contamination scare

Qatar has banned the import and sale of White Rabbit, a popular Chinese sweet which is suspected to be contaminated with industrial chemical melamine. Although preliminary investigations suggest the product is not available in the Gulf state, government officials admitted they could not rule out the possibility of it being sold locally. "Qatar has imposed a temporary ban on the import and sale of While Rabbit candy as a precautionary measure. We are inspecting all shopping outlets across the country to check whether the product is being sold here," Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari, general manager of the Qatar General Organisation for Standards and Metrology told Qatar daily The Peninsula on Monday. Inspections are expected to continue on Monday and if White Rabbit is found, they will be pulled off the shelves and lab tests will be carried out to see if the product is contaminated, he added. He said the current ban was a temporary measure intended to stop the product from entering the country. Al Kuwari also said Qatar was not importing any milk products from China. Meanwhile, the General Secretariat of UAE Municipalities, Public Health and Environment Affairs has issued a decree banning entry of all kinds of Chinese dairy products into the country.
