The Ministry of Municipality has announced that Qatar will be banning single-use plastic bags from November 15.

The ministry held a press conference to announce the controls for the use of plastic bags, in accordance with the decision of His Excellency the Minister of Municipality No. (143) for the year 2022. The regulations on the use of plastic bags, which were approved by the Honorable Council of Ministers, prohibit institutions, companies and shopping centres from using single-use plastic bags.

From November 15, 2022, the ministry urges the use of biodegradable and environmentally friendly alternatives, in order to achieve the strategic objectives of the State of Qatar in preserving the environment and reaching the optimal investment in waste recycling. The ministry encourages the use of multi-use plastic bags, biodegradable bags, bags made of paper or “woven” cloth and other biodegradable materials

The conference was attended by Mr. Ahmed Yousef Al Emadi, Director of the Legal Affairs Department, Eng. Hamad Jassim Al Bahr, Director of the Waste Recycling and Treatment Department, Eng. Mohammad Hassan Al Nuaimi, Director of Al Wakrah Municipality, and a number of Ministry officials concerned with this field.
