Qatar Assistive Technology Center and Qatar Airways launch flight simulation lab for autistic patients

Qatar Assistive Technology Center (MADA), with the support of Qatar Airways, has launched a flight simulation laboratory for children with autism spectrum disorder and their families, an exceptional facility.

The lab, which is part of MADA's innovation program, is designing and developing a realistic, virtual reality-based cabin that is both augmented to allow children with autism spectrum disorder and their parents a simulated experience of the flight on Qatar Airways.

The Flight Simulation Laboratory provides an experience designed to relieve stress and anxiety for parents and children with autism spectrum disorder when travelling by air and simulates a full flight: from safety instructions on take-off and interaction with surrounding conditions and cabin crew during flight by default to landing.

The Flight Simulation Laboratory project was one of the achievements of the MADA Innovation Programme, which was leading efforts to develop the innovation ecosystem with access to ICT and assistive technology. The project aims to integrate and empower persons with disabilities and the elderly by launching research projects and supporting the development of the latest technological solutions that kept pace with the latest developments in digital inclusion in the context of global digital transformation.
