QAFCO’s flower and vegetable show a hit among nature lovers

Doha March 30: Pumpkins, watermelons, ice and butter were turned into beautiful flower baskets and sculptures at Al Banush Club in Mesaieed yesterday in front of thousands of garden and nature lovers during Qafco’s Flower and Vegetable Show 2013. The annual event featured an array of competitions in several categories in flowers, vegetables, fruits, pot plants, flower arrangement, vegetable/fruit carving, butter carving and ice sculpture. The 26th Flower and Vegetable Show 2013 was inaugurated by the Minister of Energy and Industry H E Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada. “It has an important role in promoting environmental awareness among all sections of society, especially youth,” said Dr Al Sada. “This annual event is gaining popularity and success, reflected by significant public participation, as well as by Qafco’s drive to promote a greener environment in Qatar,” he added. Abdulaziz bin Ahmed Al Malki, Qafco Board Chairman, Khalifa Abdullah Al Sowaidi, Qafco Board Vice Chairman and CEO, Hamed Al Marwani, Qafco Chief Administration Officer and chairman of the organising committee together with several other officials were present. “We are pleased that the Flower Show attracts the attention and interest of different social sectors. This is the biggest proof of the success of our policy and gives us a boost to exert more effort in future,” said Al Malki. Qafco annual Flower and Vegetable Show is held to increase awareness about saving the environment. The unique flora show had an increased number of participants and competitors, including amateurs, professionals, hotels and schools. Over 4,000 exhibits by 450 participants were on display. Anitha Jomon was selected overall winner in the amateur category, VIjaya Luxmi Sharma was selected second and Sheikh Abdul Ghani got the third place. N K Veerma was declared the Queen of the Show in the amateur category and Queen of the Show in the professional category was awarded to the Marriot Hotel. DPS-Modern Indian School’s Neil Noronha was awarded the title of ‘Talent of the Day (Junior) and Talent of the Day (Senior) was awarded to MES Indian School. Some enthusiastic people are taking part in the competitions for the past decade. Ismail Poozhikal, a bank employee, said he is taking part in the event for the 15th year and has won many prizes. This year too his ‘Fish Anchor’ and ‘Love at First Sight’ carved out of pumpkins got first and second place in vegetable carving-amateur category and the ‘Basket of Roses’ too won the first place in Food Carving- amateur category. “Qafco’s Flower and Vegetable Show is a good platform for people interested in carving, it gives them a recognition and place to showcase talents,” said Poozhika.
