Q-POST has launched a first day cover to mark the two-day visit of Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping. “The first day cover was launched in honour of Jinping’s visit of the country,” said Q-Post chairman Ali Mohamed al-Ali. The Chinese vice- President was in Qatar on June 23 and 24. The chairman said that during the last Asian Games in December 2006, the Q-Post utilised the services of half-a-dozen Chinese translators at its philatelic bureau and at counters set up at the Athletes Village and Khalifa Sports City. The cover pictures reflected two main landmarks in China and Qatar, said al-Ali. The pictures of Doha’s Clock Tower and Beijing’s Tiananmen Square are featured in the cover. Al-Ali said the first day cover was a tribute to China, which he said, was the country, credited with having most number of stamp collectors. China is acknowledged to have about 60mn philatelists. Al-Ali also remembered the efforts made by Chinese during the last Asian Games to popularise the venues of the next Olympic Games and Asian Games, both to be hosted in China. Beijing will host the Olympic Games in coming September and Guangzhou will be the venue for the next Asian Games in 2010. Only a small volume of first day covers has been printed. The covers are available at Q-Post’s philatelic bureau at its main office.
