The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning through an awareness campaign is urging the public to follow a convenient way to receive emergency and other services fast. Residents are asked to know and refer their building, street and zone number while calling various services including the ambulance services and civil defence to reach fast, as they could find the place through the Geographical Information System. “People can refer their house, street and zone number while making any complaint with the ministry, so it would be easier for them to locate the place,” said a call centre representative at the ministry. “They could do the same while calling emergency services like ambulance or the civil defence as it could help them reach fast,” he said. ‘Remember your house number’ campaign has installed display boards showcasing that even Qpost and home delivery services can reach their customers faster if the exact address is provided. To recall, the ambulance service through an awareness campaign recently requested the public to remember their exact address as knowing the location is very essential for an ambulance to reach at a case of emergency. The Centre for Geographical Information System (GIS) at the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning (Baladiya) has already installed at least 80,000 house number plates under the Qatar Area Referencing System (QARS) project. The centre installed the numbers following an order given by the National Committee for the Coordination of Infrastructure Public Services. The committee includes members from Public Works Authority (Ashghal), Kahramaa, Mowasalat, Qtel, Ministry of Environment, Civil Defence, Qatar Petroleum and the Planning Commission. The system uses technologies having database which is linked to the Internet that makes it easy for the service providers to reach each the buildings. Also in the first phase a decision was taken to put the plates on the right side of each building and to assign odd numbers to buildings located on the left side of the road and even numbers to those on the right. The second phase produced the numbering and creating the database which also included Kahramaa number, type of building, old number, survey number, zone and street.
