Stenden University celebrates Hispanic Heritage Day Doha, State of Qatar – November 22, 2011 The Hispanic Heritage Day is an annual event celebrated at Stenden University. This year, the event took place on Thursday, November 17, 2011. More than 10 countries were represented by groups of university students who are taking Spanish courses as part of their Bachelor Studies in Business, Hospitality and Tourism, among them: Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, Perú, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, México, and Spain. The event is organized by the students of Stenden University along with their Spanish lecturers (Marianela Rivera, from Puerto Rico, and Claudia M. Sánchez, from Colombia). They prepared traditional Hispanic food, decorated the stands, show-cased information about the countries, and dressed in traditional clothes in order to show what they are learning in class and teach other students and guests about the Hispanic culture. At this year‟s event, Stenden University students had the chance to meet the ambassadors from Cuba and Uruguay and a representative of the Venezuelan Embassy who visited the stands and spent time talking to the students and trying different kinds of food. Other guests included the Ballet Folklórico Latinoamericano, a group of Hispanic ladies who delighted everyone with a Hispanic dance show, as well as guests from Venezuela and Colombia, who spent time with the students and brought some of their traditional meals to share with them. During the event students had different competitions. Celebrated as „Best Stand‟ was Puerto Rico, as „Best Food‟ Spain and Argentina, and as „Best Traditionally Dressed‟ the students Soumaya Subhi Taha and Wael Wafic Maarouf. At the end of the event, the students broke the traditional “Piñatas” and got prizes as well. The top prizes were kindly sponsored by Oryx Rotana Hotel, The Pearl Qatar and the Marriott Doha. Other prizes were vouchers from Virgin Megastore and cinema tickets. The event was so successful that together with the faculty and student representative along with the embassy representatives it was decided that as of 2012 the event will be a joint week-long initiative including cultural presentations and movies the week before the event.
