In a crackdown on private taxi operators, the Traffic Police and Patrol Department has arrested 60 illegal cabbies and referred them for legal action. Their cars have been seized, the Ministry of Interior under which the traffic department falls, said in a statement yesterday. The drive against illegal taxi operators is part of interior ministry’s effort to ensure road safety, raise public awareness and detect traffic-related violations. Article 57 of the Traffic Law (No. 19 of 2007) prohibits the use of vehicles for purposes other than they have been licensed and registered. Besides violating the provisions of the traffic law, private taxi operators pose grave risks to motorists and pedestrians. They stop on the road abruptly to pick up or drop ‘passengers’ creating chaos and confusion. This hampers the smooth flow of traffic and can lead to accidents, the ministry statement added. The Traffic Department has urged the public not to use illegal taxis for their own good and to help the drive against them. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=March2009&file=Local_News20090306777.xml
