London based Greek group, Plastikes Karekles (Plastic Chairs) to perform at Katara Doha, April 16th, 2012: Katara, the Cultural Village, announces the first Greek Day to be held over Friday 20th and Saturday 21st of April, 2012. Two unique performances come to Qatar for the first time; Dionysis Grammenos will perform on Friday 20th April, 7:30pm at the Drama Theatre, Building 16, Katara. London based Greek band, Plastikes Karekles (Plastic Chairs) will perform Saturday 21st of April, 2012 at 1:30pm at the Drama Theatre, Building 16, Katara. Hailed as one of the most important clarinettists of the current day, Dionysis Grammenos, will perform alongside Doha String Quartet and Sonja Park. Grammenos began his career in 2008 when became the first wind player to win the Eurovision Young Musicians International Competition. He has since collaborated with several orchestras’ including the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra and worked with conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Christian Lindberg, Ari Rasilainen, Michalis Economou and Shao En, to name a few. Dr. Emad Sultan, Cultural Affairs Director said, “We are proud to announce this event, which celebrates the best of Greek arts. Katara continues to bring world-renowned artists and musicians, contributing to our overall vision to educate and entertain whilst building cultural bridges.” Plastikes Karekles (Plastic Chairs) plays music inspired by Greek Rebetiko from the 1920’s. The repertoire encompasses the true essence of Greek music originating from the Greek main land to the Greek Islands. The group is made up of international musicians, including Greek folk musicians who perform in different combinations, from a duo to 17 piece band. The group have performed at the Purcell Room in London and Le Divan Du Monde in Paris.
