Qatar is to get a new Philippine Ambassador, with Crescente R Relacion being administered the oath of office before Secretary Alberto Romulo of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) last week. Relacion, who was executive director of migrant workers affairs at the DFA, took the oath before Romulo as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the State of Qatar in a simple ceremony at the DFA office in Pasay City in the Philippines, according to a report on the DFA’s website. Relacion was among eight new Philippine ambassadors and chiefs of mission to different diplomatic missions around the world sworn into office by Romulo. His appointment as Ambassador to Qatar was confirmed by the Commission on Appointments on May 27. The current Philippine Ambassador to Qatar, Isaias Begonia, has been appointed Ambassador to Romania. Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates is to get its first Philippine lady envoy, Grace Princesa. It is not yet clear as to when Relacion will arrive in Qatar and assume his post, but it is likely to be after the celebration of the Philippine Independence Day on June 12. The Filipino community in Qatar will be holding its biggest celebrations for the Independence Day this year, with a weeks-long array of activities lined up for the occasion. It will, however, be the first time the Philippine Embassy in Qatar will not host a diplomatic reception on the occasion. This is because of the absence of Begonia, who has been out of the country for the past few months. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=June2009&file=Local_News2009060254227.xml
