Visitors to Souq Waqif are looking forward to the opening of the the newly set up “smart parking” facility there. They feel with the new facility in place, they won’t have to spend much time looking for a suitable parking spot, thus making a visit to the culturally rich shopping hub more worthwhile. Souq Waqif sees a large number of nationals, expatriates and tourists flock to the myriad shops and eateries which provide a delectable and varied fare. Due to the number of cars which show up there, it is very difficult and sometimes well nigh impossible to get a vacant parking slot. The new parking system, therefore, is being eagerly awaited by those who frequent the place. Being introduced in phases, after having been praised during the trial run, the facility will also lead to more parking space in the the area to meet the increasing demand. The new system aims to reduce traffic congestion around the parking lot making it easier for motorists to park their vehicles. The system comes with electronic gates which will ease the entry and exit of vehicles. “Souq Waqif is one of the most active and popular cultural sites in Doha. It is a platform to show our heritage to visitors,” said Abdulla Al Naimi, a visitor. “The search for a parking slot here is a mood-spoiler, so I’m glad that they will introduce this new parking system as it will definitely make visitors enjoy their time here. The parking is expected to cost not more than QR3, the main object being the regulation of traffic rather than making profit. It is expected that the parking fee will keep away trucks and large vehicles which usually clog traffic. “The expansion of the parking area is a welcome move. When me and my friends go to the Souq, it usually takes us half an hour to hunt for vacant parking slots. I hope the ordeal will end soon” said Tamer Abdulla. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=July2009&file=Local_News200907204216.xml
