Qatar will launch 31 projects in all its municipalities to build new public parks, playgrounds and to maintain existing parks, as well as to beautify townships and roads in the framework of a comprehensive urban plan, the Minister of Municipality and Urban Planning H E Sheikh Abdul Rahman bin Khalifa Al Thani, said. The country has allocated QR128m in the 2010 -2011 budget to develop towns and districts. QR60m has been allocated to develop and maintain the interior streets, and QR89m to finance urban planning design projects, the minister said in an interview with Al Jaeza magazine, published by the Arab Towns Organization (ATO) Awards. Despite the quantum leap that Qatar has witnessed in economic and urban development, heritage markets and buildings as well as quarters and street names derived from local environment had maintained their cultural, religious and national identity, said the minister. Qatar supports the ATO Awards since its establishment believing in the importance of its role in maintaining the identity of Arab cities. The 115 nominations to the 10th session of ATO Awards confirm the growing interest of Arab towns to develop and compete strongly with their counterparts, said the minister. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=May2010&file=Local_News201005127333.xml
