Some of the world’s most famous and difficult music pieces were performed by the SAKO orchestra led by skilful play of the Oud, or lute. Performing his first show in Doha, maestro and Oud virtuoso Salem Abdul Kareem, who decided the concert in honour of the instrument, led the orchestra and played the most difficult music pieces on the Oud. The Oud was specially modified, in terms of dimensions, strings and quality of materials used, allowing it to produce tunes distinctive and powerful enough to lead the orchestra. The concert titled The East and the West, was organised by the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, as part of the “Doha, Capital of Arab Culture 2010”. The origin of the music pieces varied, from Egypt, Turkey, Russia, France, Germany and other countries. http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=352711&version=1&template_id=36&parent_id=16
