Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Said dies aged 79; Sultan Haitham bin Tariq bin Taimur named successor

The Sultanate of Oman's Diwan of Royal Court today announced the death Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who passed away late Friday.

In a statement carried by the Omani news agency, the Diwan of the Royal Court declared a three-day period of national mourning for the public and private sectors.

Sultan Qaboos bin Said was born on November 18, 1940, and he assumed the reins of power in the Sultanate of Oman on July 23, 1970.

Sultan Haitham bin Tariq bin Taimur Al Said was announced Saturday as the new Sultan of the Sultanate of Oman, in succession to Sultan Qaboos bin Said who died Friday evening.

Oman News Agency reported today that the Defence Council said that it received a reply from the Royal Family, in which they said that out of gratitude and appreciation to Sultan Qaboos bin Said, they appointed the person the late Sultan chose in his will, announcing Sultan Haitham bin Tariq bin Taimur Al Said as the Sultan of Oman.
