THE Cabinet has accepted the Advisory Council’s recommendation on the need to review the new Traffic Law No 19 of 2007 on completion of one year of its implementation, according to reports published in the local Arabic press. The council had discussed the law in detail two months ago and had unanimously refused to ratify it. The council believed that the new law did not reflect a balanced approach on several issues. Among the points of objection raised by the council members were: the amounts to be paid as fines are too high for the offences involved; the point system and imprisonment are unwarranted additions; imprisonment is seen as a slur on the person’s reputation in his immediate circle; some of the punishments in the new law are too severe for offences that do not endanger peoples’ lives; and the law is not comprehensible for the illiterate and old people. Gulf Times I agree. I mean, I hate people who park on side walks, but that's why we need polls to stop people from parking there and more traffic police. At the moment it's 500 QR and 3 points on your license! Wtf?
