Qatari women who are married to non-Qataris can get monthly assistance from the Social Affairs Department at the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. This is based on a draft of a new law on social security recently completed by a committee. The committee gave a number of proposals including a number of categories in the society which should be getting monthly assistance from the Social Affairs Department at the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. Besides Qatari women who are married to non-Qataris, the categories also include the physically challenged, disabled who are married and their wives, and unmarried people. According to a local Arabic daily, the proposals under the new draft law put certain rules or guidelines for granting this assistance. These guidelines should be applied to all — those who are already benefiting from social security and the new categories mentioned which are yet to be included. In case this draft is approved, new categories like widows, divorced, needy family, orphan, the aged, family of a prisoner, and others will be added. The proposals also mention that the monthly assistance should be raised since there had been no amendment to increase the assistance for quite some time.
