Qatar Chapter of the Institution of Engineers (India) held a seminar on Street Lighting recently at the Qatar Malalayali Samajam Hall. Er Afsar Pasha, Executive Committee member, IEI, Qatar Chapter and the Senior Lighting Engineer of Ashghal was the speaker. Pasha, during his presentation on street lighting, explained the history and the concept in details. He dwelt upon the history and advantage of road lighting, different types of luminaire and lamps in use, advantages and disadvantages of each type of lamp used in road lighting, working of different components inside the luminaire, factors to be considered for lighting design, precautionary measures to be taken during installation and the factors to be considered for maintenance. Earlier, the institution's Honorary Chairman, Er Debashis Roy, in his welcome address presented the synopsis on "Street Lighting." Roy also pointed out that since its inception in 1991, IEI, Qatar Chapter, has achieved the unique distinction of being the largest and the most active overseas Chapter. The Institution of Engineers (India) has approved the Qatar Chapter as the only overseas centre for conducting "Professional Engineering" examination. The Institution of Engineers (India) issues "Professional Engineers" certificates in nine branches of engineering to corporate members who qualify in the "Professional Engineering" examination. IEI, Qatar Chapter, joined hands with Aptech Qatar to use their facilities for conducting "PE" examination in Doha for Indian engineers in Middle East. The Chairman also appealed to all the members to avail of this facility to become certified "Professional Engineers" by The Institution of Engineers (India). The Institution's Honorary Secretary Er Aniruddha Kulkarni compered the proceedings and said that since its inception, Qatar Chapter of the Institution of Engineers (India) has been celebrating Engineer's Day in September every year with a variety of events like a theme seminar, publication of a technical souvenir, grand finale public function etc. This year, the Chapter will celebrate the 41st Engineers Day on September 26.
