The Ministry of Municipality and Environment, represented by the Department of Protection and Wildlife, has announced that the project of protecting the hawksbill sea turtle, which is threatened with extinction. This will continue this season while taking all precautions that guarantee the safety of the project team.
The fieldwork of the project has witnessed an acceleration in the nesting operations late this week. (12) nests were transferred to the protected nest site at the Fuwairit Beach. All necessary measurements were taken for turtles, cleaning them from snails and treating some injuries they have.
The project of marine turtle protection is being implemented under the supervision of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and with funding from Qatar Petroleum and the implementation of the Centre for Environmental Sciences at Qatar University in cooperation with a team from the Department of Protection and Wildlife. The project covers the north-eastern beaches in the country (Ras Laffan Beach, Hawilah, Al Jassasiya, Maruna, Fuwairit, Al-Ghariyah, Al-Mufair), and the islands (Umm Tais, Ras Rukn).
