Mowasalat probes meter tampering complaint

Mowasalat is investigating into a complaint about a Karwa taxi driver who allegedly tried to cheat a passenger by manipulating the fare. The Peninsula reported the incident yesterday, in which the driver issued a ticket of QR24.50 to the passenger for a trip that would have actually cost QR17 or QR18, if calculated on the basis of the distance and duration of the trip shown in the ticket. The passenger alleged that the driver was tampering with the meter and was initially reluctant to issue the ticket. The driver, however, took only QR17 from the passenger after the latter questioned the high fare. He excused himself by saying that the meter was not working properly. Reacting to the report, a senior Mowasalat official told this newspaper yesterday that company will investigate into the incident. A copy of the ticket was made available to the company office yesterday. "This an unusual complaint and we can not say what happened, until we investigate the incident," said the official.
