Mowasalat has added 250 new buses to its fleet as part of the transport company’s expansion exercise.
The new fleet includes 45 buses designed to facilitate commuting by people with special needs.
Addressing a press conference yesterday, Nasser al-Khanji, director, business development and strategy, Mowaslat, said the buses are equipped with electronically operated movable footboards to ensure easy and safe entry to physically challenged people.
“At the pressing of a button by driver, a physically challenged passenger moving on a wheel chair could easily get access into the bus by raising its electronically movable footboard,” he said.
On board the new buses, physically challenged passengers could have four to six dedicated places where they could sit on their wheel chairs, tied by a safety belt.
The Mowaslat director said that in future more public transport buses would be equipped with the similar facilities to ensure safe entry and exit for physically
challenged passengers.
Mohamed Ali, director, engineering, informed that 40 new luxury coaches of the company, used for ferrying delegates for conferences, meetings and exhibitions are equipped with such technologies as digital geographic information systems (GIS), global position system (GPS) and general packet radio
service (GPRS).
The equipping of buses with such facilities would help the company’s main call centre in Abu Hamour monitor the movement of all buses and communications and SMS messages could be sent to the drivers instantaneously from the centre.
The buses are also equipped with individual safety belts in every seat and have spacious cabins and corridors made in accordance with the highest safety standards to prevent
injuries, he said.
As added features, the new vehicles are equipped with screens and DVD, and CD players.
The latest batch also includes school buses which will replace several buses, currently being operated to ferry schoolchildren.
