A Doha court of first instance has ordered a motorist to pay QR274,000, jointly with the insurance company, as compensation to a Bangladeshi boy whom he knocked down in the Hilal area. The court also fined him QR10,000 for reckless driving. The nine-year-old boy had suffered severe injuries in the accident on December 12, 2007. During the trial, the court heard how the accused overtook a school bus from the left and hit the boy, who after disembarking from the bus was crossing the road. A traffic department official testified that the accused did not wait until the bus moved ahead. The traffic policeman said: “The accident took place in a populated area and the accused was supposed to wait until the bus moved ahead after dropping the child. The speed limit on the street was 50 kmph but I estimate the motorist was doing 60.” The accused, a Qatari, denied responsibility for the accident saying that the bus stopped at a place where it was not supposed to. The boy’s father told Gulf Times that he intended to file a civil case against the accused. http://gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=282677&version=1&template_id=36&parent_id=16 Again why does nationalities matter?
