DOHA THE Ministry of Environment (MoE) is launching a countrywide campaign to rid the streets of Qatar of the menace of stray dogs and cats. To start from Doha, the campaign will see deployment of a number of dedicated teams drawn from the Livestock Management Department at the ministry tasked with hunting stray cats and dogs, which are not only an unwelcome sight but also a health threat for the populace. According to the Ministry of Environment's announcement, this campaign emanates from its commitment and efforts to protect the environment of Qatar and maintain the overall health of citizens and residents through elimination of all that threatens the health of the people, especially the stray cats and dogs proliferating in the streets. It noted that the ministry is keen to maintain natural balance in the streets in accordance with international standards of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). To accomplish the task, the country has been divided into several administrative sections, each one to be covered by one of the team of welltrained personnel from the Livestock Management Department. Divisions are further divided into specific areas on the basis of the extent of the problem exemplified by the number of complaints.
