The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) took part in the international event "Earth Hour" last night (28 March 2020) by switching-off lights in its main buildings from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm.
On the occasion, His Excellency Minister of Municipality and Environment Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie said that the Ministry's keenness on joining the countries of the world in the celebration of Earth Hour 2020 comes within the directions of Qatar in preserving environmental sustainability as one of the main pillars of the Qatar National Vision 2030, and the instructions of wise leadership in this regard.
His Excellency noted that the marking Earth Hour this year under the theme (One Hour .. One Planet .. One Future), embodied the importance of the concerted efforts of all countries to protect the planet from the risks that everyone faces.
He pointed out that in its strategy, the Ministry had adopted many projects and environmental programmes that aim to preserve the environment, its development and sustainability, and to preserve the biological diversity in Qatar and strived to maintain its natural balance and enhance cooperation with all sectors and society in the state in this regard.
H.E. the Minister urged all government bodies, institutions, companies and individuals in the society to make the Earth Hour an opportunity every year to show everyone's determination to contribute to protecting the environment of Qatar, by reducing the use of unnecessary vehicles, equipment and lighting.
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment participates in this event every year to remind countries, institutions and societies of climate change and work to preserve the planet and reduce pollution in its various types and sources, as well as encouraging the public to interact with this global initiative in order to reduce carbon emissions and preserve the environment.
The Earth Hour is a global solidarity event, during which individuals and societies are encouraged to switch-off lights and unnecessary electronic devices for one hour, to raise awareness of reducing electricity consumption, which contributes to reducing the impact of climate change.
The world celebrates the Earth Hour initiative, which was launched by the World Conservation Union in 2007 in the Australian city of Sydney, on the last Saturday in March every year, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm local time for the participating countries.
