It wasn’t that long ago when Mr. Q got the opportunity to visit the Mitsubishi factory to learn about the Montero Sport last year. Naturally, this year when they asked us if we would like to review one, we couldn’t resist!

It's the off-road season and Mitsubishi has just launched its brand new Montero Sport and this was the perfect opportunity for us to test its off-road capability, and share our thoughts.

The Mitsubishi Montero Sport in Qatar replaces the Mitsubishi Nativa. The car is based on the Mitsubishi Pickup Truck platform which is not a bad thing, but goes to show how Mitsubishi, like other manufacturers can make use of existing platforms ensuring the efficient production of these vehicles.

The model we got our hands on was a fully loaded option which probably has more amazing features than you can imagine. We'll be breaking down this review in four short paragraphs to make it easy to digest!

Interior

A car in 2020 needs to have an interior that is somewhat luxurious regardless of price point. Mitsubishi Montero Sport does not disappoint in that department. The leather interior with sleek lines running all over the dashboard makes sure you have a comfortable and pleasing place to spend time. The 2020 model also includes an infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Instead of traditional instrument clusters, the model boosts its luxury with an 8” LCD screen that you can customize with pre-loaded skins for the tachometer and speedometer.

The steering wheel is wrapped in leather as well to make the longer journeys much more comfortable and if you’re feeling sporty there are paddle shifters in case you want to take control of those gear shifts.

Moving on to the back of the car, the third-row seating offers ample interior and cargo space to get your whole crew where they need. There is an AC vent for each passenger and unlike some other cars, the entry to the third-row seat can be done from either side of the car. Talk about the ease of use.

Our model also comes equipped with a sunroof adding that extra icing on the cake.

Features

Now, let’s shed light on some cool features that we think it’s best to experience them during your test drive:

360-degree camera - Making parking that much easier

Automatic tailgate - Putting groceries in the car has never been easier. With just a flick of your foot at the rear of the car, the tailgate opens automatically.

Turning fog lights - While turning the car automatically turns on the fog light of the car making your turning path more visible.

Front and rear parking sensors - Parking in tight spots is not a problem anymore!

HDMI port - Use the car’s display and project movies/videos right from your laptop!

Dual USB Ports
- We all have more than one device these days that need to be juiced up so Mitsubishi has equipped this car with two USB charging ports.

150 Watts Socket
- Working on the go? Or maybe camping? This 150 Watts socket will always come in handy no matter what the situation is!

There’s so much more to talk about here but we reckon it’s better to experience it.

Driving

A great car doesn’t include only different features and fascinating looks, but also it does set the standard for reliable and safe driving. We’re glad to inform you that this car doesn’t disappoint you even in that department. It features a V6 engine mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission ensuring good fuel economy and a comfortable ride. The low-end torque of this car guarantees that you don’t need to press the accelerator hard to get the car moving.

Despite sharing the platform with the Mitsubishi Pickup Truck, the turning circle and the feel of the ride doesn’t feel like it’s a truck. The car has a 218MM ground clearance making it perfect for dune bashing and offroading!

Got stuck in the mud? You can lock the rear-differential of the car ensuring power to the wheels goes in one direction and you’ll be out of the mud in no time!

When it comes to off-road experience, it’s not pleasing if the suspension feels like you’re riding a horse which is not the case here. On roads or off-roads, the suspension of this car won’t disappoint you.

Overall verdict

We think this car has its own class and should be on your list of buying cars in case you’re looking for an off-roader that can haul 7 folks comfortably. Overall, we believe that Mitsubishi has proved that you really don’t need to spend a fortune to get a nice car.
