Ministry of Municipality and Environment launched a campaign to remove abandoned cars in a number of areas of Doha with the participation of a number of representatives of the concerned authorities in the State.
Vice Chairman of the committee for the removal of the abandoned cars Saleh Hassan Al Kuwari said the committee removed all abandoned cars that distort the public view in different areas, especially located in the places of car repair workshops. The cars were taken to tow yards in Al Mashaf.
He added that the law specifies the fines of abandoned cars to be QR 1000, in addition to QR 500 for towing charges.
Assistant director of mechanical equipment department and committee member Marzouk Al Musaifri said the ministry has plans to consider through the provision of inspectors to carry out periodic campaigns in all regions of the country to combat abandoned cars in the roads and residential neighborhoods.
Director of municipal control department in Doha municipality Salem Hmoud Al Shafi said the campaign focuses on abandoned cars within the municipal boundaries, noting that leaving these cars neglected in public areas is an abuse of society and the public view of the State and also impedes the development process, plans, and strategic projects.
He called on car owners to cooperate with the concerned parties to preserve the public property, the public view and abide by the hygiene law.
Head of public control department at Doha municipality and committee member Hamad Sultan Al Shahwani presented the efforts made by the municipality periodically and continuously to monitor abandoned cars.
The campaign comes within the framework of the continuous efforts of the ministry to reduce this phenomenon, which distorts the public view, in accordance with Law No. 18 of 2017 on public hygiene.
The committee for the removal of the abandoned cars at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment has impounded 61,524 abandoned vehicles from all over the country since 2013 under its campaign to protect health and environment.
The committee impounded 43,202 abandoned vehicles to Al Mashaf Tow Yard and 18,312 abandoned vehicles to Mesaimeer (Abu Hamour) Tow Yard.
The ministry prepared a new tow yard with the capacity of 25,000 to 30,000 abandoned vehicles which will open soon in Al Mazrouh, Umm Salal Municipality. Al Mazrouh Tow Yard is ready to join the two existing two yards in Al Mashaf at Al Wakra and Misaimeer at Abu Hamour.
