The public cleaning department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment continued its massive clean-up drive to save the North West beaches from pollutants.
Safar Mubarak Al Shafi, General Cleanliness Department Director, said that “the campaign, since it was launched in November 20, removed 2,192 tonnes of waste, including 1,440 tonnes of residual oil and 752 tonnes of other waste."
The first phase of the campaign, which started from Abu Daluf to Al Arish, has been completed, and the second clean –up drive has started and will continue for two weeks, he said.
The cleanliness plan was divided into three phases to clean up about 65km of beaches and the Department has provided a permanent place for workers until the end of the campaign.
All requirements needed to accomplish the task have been offered by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, because it gives priority to cleaning all beaches as important places for visitors especially on weekends.
Al Shafi urged the people to support the Ministry’s efforts to maintain cleanliness on beaches and islands and refrain from throwing waste in designated places and avoid careless behaviour which might harm the ecosystem.
Many other departments are participating in the campaign, like the Environmental Protection Reserves & Wildlife Department, Fisheries Department and Qatar Petroleum.
