A silent march will be held today on the Corniche to show sympathy to the family of Mohamed al-Majed, the Qatari boy who died following an attack by local youths in Hastings in the UK, some two weeks ago. The father and members of Mohamed’s family are expected to join the programme, a spokesperson for the organisers said. “We are planning to use this opportunity to show our sympathy for the family of Mohamed and also make a stand against this kind of meaningless violence. Hopefully the UK government (and others around the world) will take note and give this kind of behaviour zero tolerance,” Gwen Newnham said. “We will go to the Corniche tomorrow, exactly one week after the original stand was made in Hastings,” she said. “It will be more of a slow walk than a march and will begin from the Sheraton end of the Corniche at 4.45pm.” Gwen has urged participants to bring something yellow, to be recognised. “It can be a flower, a balloon, an armband, or even an item of clothing, anything that will distinguish the stand you are making,” she said. “We will quietly walk or stand in the Corniche area, with our yellow distinguishing marker.” And for those who cannot join the group, Gwen has urged supporters to wear or show something yellow during the day. “The time is not important but the colour will show your thoughts are with the boy’s family.” The main groups that are behind the silent walk are the ILQ (iloveqatar.net), qatarliving / and expatwomanqatar.com Gwen said this cause was “close to our heart as my husband’s family is living in the Hastings area”. She said they were pleased to know that the townsfolk had come out in their hundreds to express their sympathy. GT
