The vast majority of Arabs have no faith in the current Afghan government - and almost a quarter believe the Taliban would be a better option. The views emerged from a wide-ranging opinion poll, commissioned by The Doha Debates. Nearly eight out of 10 respondents said it was not worth fighting for the current Afghan government – a view shared by just over half the mainly- Arab audience at last month’s Doha Debate. The survey highlighted concerns that the current administration is unable to provide security for its people, with 70 percent saying President Karzai is not a credible partner for the international community. The poll was conducted by YouGov between January 26 and January 31 and involved nearly 1,000 respondents in 18 Arab countries in the Gulf, North Africa and Levant. Just over half those polled still believe Afghans will one day experience democracy first-hand.
