One of the biggest international music concerts ever staged in Qatar kicked off yesterday with legendary musician Yanni performing live at the Qatar National Convention Centre. Speaking at a press conference held before the show, the musician said he was delighted to perform in Qatar. “For me music is something which should come from the heart and I hope the people here will feel that when they come to the concert,” he said. The concert, sponsored by Doha Bank, will be held again today at the same venue. This is the first time ever that the world famous musician, composer and pianist Yanni and his troupe are performing in Qatar. The two-day musical event has been brought to Doha by Bandera Qatar. Oryx Rotana is the official host of event. The concert also has a charitable initiative. A portion of the proceeds has been earmarked for Shaffallah Centre for children with special needs. “Yanni has close to 80,000 fans in the Middle East and since Qatar is known to host premium events and concerts, we felt that we should have at least two shows here. We want to give as many Yanni fans as possible the chance to see him perform live,” a spokesperson from the organisers, Bandera Qatar, said. Under the theme, ‘World Without Borders’, Yanni has performed around the world. He recently played in Oman to a sold-out concert. He has played the world over including at the historic 16th-century Castillo San Felipe Del Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a Unesco heritage site. Yanni has brought hundreds of millions of fans and fellow world citizens together through his concerts, with countless experiencing the magic of his music through television broadcasts.
