Aggrieved workers can now file complaints against their employers in several Asian languages, using self-service machines — a move the labour ministry said would help it protect workers’ rights.
Besides Arabic and English, workers will be able to lodge complaints in Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Bengali and Nepali, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported. If need be, more languages would be added to the system.
The Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, H E Abdullah Saleh Mubarak Al Khulaifi, inaugurated the machines yesterday.
“Built using latest hardware and software, the devices use an innovative system to facilitate the process of registering a worker’s complaint,” QNA said.
All a worker needs to do to lodge a complaint is follow three simple steps to fill a form. He can then take a printout of the complaint with all the relevant data and submit it to the labour affairs department at the labour ministry, where the dispute would be resolved.
The new devices aim to remove communications barriers created by many workers’ lack of knowledge of Arabic and English. The move will enable workers from different countries to seek redress of work-related problems.
