Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) opened yesterday fourth power substation at a cost of about QR165m to supply electricity to the Green Line of Doha Metro of Qatar Rail at Doha West near Mall of Qatar.

The Green Line runs east from Al Riffa to Al Mansoura in the west serving 11 stations along the line.

“The project ‘Doha West Metro Super Substation’ with the capacity of 220/132/33KV will be connected with three giant power stations – Dukhan, Ras Laffan-1 and Bani Hajar to ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity to Qatar Rail project due to its importance,” said Eng Ahmad Ali Al Kuwari, Head of Electricity Projects Section at Kahramaa.

Al Kuwari was speaking with media person on the sidelines of the inaugural ceremony at the facility of the substation.

He said that the new substation is the fourth out of a total of five substations being implemented by Kahramaa for Qatar Rail at a cost of QR700m.

“Fifth and the last substation with a parking lot in Al Bidaa for Doha Metro is expected to be completed by second quarter (Q2) of next year,” said Al Kuwari. He said that the work to build Al Bidda substation is at a very advanced stage.

“We have completed civil works of the substation. The project was designed specially to add a car parking lot due to strategic location of the area,” said Al Kuwari.

He said that first substation for Qatar Rail was opened at Ras Abu Fantas in July 2017, second substation at Lusail was commissioned in March 2018 and the third substation at Al Waab was opened in June 2018.

He said that the power substations for Doha Metro are equipped with special technology to ensure uninterrupted power supply in emergency situation.

Speaking about the safety and security, Al Kuwari said: “Kahramaa is following international standards in building its electricity supply networks as per the requirements of metro station in collaboration with Qatar Rial.”

Al Kuwari added that Kahramaa gives top priority to the welfare of workers to improve their living condition considering them partners of development.

He said that Kahramaa is following global standard of safety and security measures at all its operations as one million man-hours without a lost time injury (LTI) was recorded during the implementation of the project of Doha West Metro Super Substation which took 22 months.
