DOHA • As Qatar's economy continues to grow at breakneck speed, more job opportunities in brand new sectors are opening up. The events industry is a case in point. At a press conference held yesterday at the Four Seasons Hotel, Qatar MICE Development Institute (QMDI) announced it will be offering an events management training programme from September or October this year for 20 Qatari nationals. MICE is the acronym for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions. Advertisements in local media are expected to attract applicants who will then undergo an interview in collaboration with the Qatar Foundation here. Training will be imparted by Meetings Professional International (MPI). On-the-job training is among the benefits the selected candidates will receive in addition to the fact the certification will be valid all over the world. Those certified will also be given the opportunity to enter into more advanced MPI programmes, including the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) recognition. Rashid Al Naimi, QMDI Chairman, in a statement, said: "By investing in local talent now, we are shaping the events industry leaders of Qatar's future. The range and quality of facilities on offer in Qatar give the country the solid foundation to be a leading MICE destination. As we continue to get bigger, we must ensure there is a bank of suitably-qualified people in Qatar for us to employ." Joyce Dogniez, MPI Director of Operations, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), said: "We are very pleased QMDI has identified the need to invest in people and in particular, grow the skills in the Qatari market." MPI has over 24,000 members worldwide. The Peninsula
