According to official sources, the QGate toll tax is most likely to be implemented in approximately two years or when all major parallel road works are complete. Though the amount of the tax has not been decided yet, one thing is clear that the aim of the QGate is to reduce traffic congestion on the Shamal Road (highway).
Another speculation is that there will be a rechargeable e-card attached to the vehicle's windscreen, and whenever the vehicle passes the QGate, the tax will be deducted from the card.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC) has responded and affirmed that the QGate is indeed a toll plaza / gate. It also clarified that the QGate system will be implemented and the toll tax activated when all of Qatar's major road works conclude within 4 - 6 years. More QGates are expected as well.
Ashghal, also known as Qatar's Public Works Authority, had published a statement recently saying the QGate was not their project and they had nothing to do with it.
We reached out to Ashghal to gain more insight on the 'QGate' and to find out out what it was. Ashghal directed us to the (MOTC and told told us the MOTC would have more information on the QGate.
As of now, we are still waiting for MOTC to respond.
Since yesterday an image of a signage with ‘QGate’ (see cover image) written in big bold letters has been circulating all over Qatar’s social media. It seems the sign is on the Shamal Road just before the Aspire Zone exit, and according to sources, it’s very much real with many claiming they have seen the sign on the Shamal Road this morning.
What could this signage be?
Is Qatar really getting a toll plaza like some of its neighbours?
Up until now, no one has any concrete information, but as soon as we have any additional information, we’ll be sure to share with you all. We are as intrigued as you are.
