Internal roads in a number of residential localities across Doha which are lying in bad shape, will be undergoing major repairs with renovation costs running into millions of riyals, it is reliably learnt. Details of the project are to be announced by Doha Municipality at a news conference today. The localities where the roads are earmarked for facelift include Najma, Mansoura, Doha Jadeed and Frig Abdul Aziz. Other areas to be covered by the repair project are Ummghuwalina, Old Ghanem (both north and south), Bin Mahmoud, Al Muntazah, Musherib, Old Al Hitmi, Al Asmakh, Al Khulaifat, Old Salata, Bin Dirham, Al Nijada, Diwan and Mohamed bin Jassem. In all, some 19 residential localities have been identified for the implementation of the project. Work is expected to start with immediate effect and 20 months’ time will be given to the contracting company to complete the upgradation work. Financial allocation for the project is to come from the state budget of the current fiscal (2009-10) which has earmarked a huge outlay for public projects. Doha Municipality earlier inked a deal with a major local contracting company to carry out the road repair work and details are to be announced at the press briefing at the municipality’s headquarters today. It may be noted here that while arterial roads (both planned and existing ones) lie within the jurisdiction of the Public Works Authority, popularly known as Ashghal, internal or interior roads are a responsibility of the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=June2009&file=Local_News2009061033926.xml
