InterContinental Doha’s 1st Raft Race a huge success InterContinental Doha in collaboration with ILQ – iloveqatar.net hosted its first Raft Race and Grand Family Day at its beachfront on Friday. Fifteen teams representing various schools, private companies and hotels participated in the fun event billed ‘Hope Floats’. The day-long activity was organised to raise fund for the preservation initiative of InterContinental Doha of Safliya, a small island near Doha and breeding place for many types of birds. It was also intended to promote the concept of recycling as only rafts made of recycled materials were allowed to take part in the race. “We are very glad to see a good turnout of participants to the first edition of this annual event. We are looking forward to hosting this fun event annually,” Hafidh al Busaidy, General Manager of InterContinental Doha Hotel commented on the success of the event. The participating teams brought rafts of various sizes and shapes at the race. Water bottles, tire tubes, Styrofoam and boxes were among the materials commonly used to come up with the most unique, eco-friendly and functional rafts. A number of teams were awarded for their efforts in building their rafts. Team ‘Good Looking’ was awarded The Van Gogh Award for their colourful and aesthetically-appealing raft made of water drums and some woods. Team ‘In the Drink’ from Doha Golf Club received The Tea Cup Award for its strategically designed raft. International School of London Qatar had two teams in the race, team of teachers and the students. The students who finished last in their batch went home with The Flop Award. Meanwhile, the raft of Doha Hotels PR and Marketers which barely float got The Fabulous GM’s Award which is meant for the raft more likely to cause a spectacle than win the race. But the big winners of the event were the top three finishers of the race. W Doha Hotel, with its raft complete with outrigger or the boat’s balance beam, won the First Prize. Second Prize went to Newton International School while the Team Good Looking went home with Third Prize. Other race participants were Park House English School-Qatar, InterContinental Doha F&B, ‘On Board Service’ from GE Aviation, Crowne Plaza, two teams from The Bay Club, Sea Duchs and Cedar Dragons.
