Qatar Tribune reported that The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and Widam Food Company, has announced the initiative to support sheep prices for citizens during the holy month of Ramadan.

It has been agreed with Widam Food Company to provide about 30,000 heads of local sheep, and if the local sheep are not enough then Syrian sheep to be sold at subsidised and reduced prices for citizens (two heads of sheep per citizen).

Each citizen has to present the original ID card at Widam outlets in Doha, Al Khor, Al Mazrouah and Al Shahhaniyah areas according to the following weights and prices: Local sheep (Arab Awassi) from 30 kg to 35 kg with QR1,000 and Syrian sheep 40 kg and above for QR950.

The sale will start from the morning of Friday, 28 Sha’ban 1440H, corresponding to May 3 and will continue until the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

The Ministry has made provision for immediate slaughtering in slaughterhouses to ensure that it reaches the target group. Widam Food Company will provide an air-conditioned tent for the beneficiaries of this initiative.

There will be an additional cost of QR16 for slaughter, shredding and packaging and QR 34 for the Hamali, through separate coupons.

MoCI confirmed that it will continue to intensify its inspection campaigns at outlets to ensure that live sheep and other foodstuffs are available in the market.

The ministry will take all necessary measures to protect consumers, combat commercial fraud, protect competition and prevent monopoly practices.

The ministry has urged all consumers to report any irregularities through its communication channels.

In February, the ministries of commerce, municipalities launched a joint national initiative to promote local production and subsidise sheep meat prices.
