Independent Schools will strictly enforce rules on student absenteeism from today.

They will not accept health certificates issued by private healthcare facilities to students applying for sick leave.

Only health certificates issued by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and its affiliates will be accepted.

Supreme Education Council (SEC) sources told Al Sharq that Independent School managements had been issued directives regarding the student absenteeism rules.

“The managements are contacting parents to make them understand the importance of the rules and urge their cooperation to ensure their children attend the school regularly,” said the daily.

The rules ask the Independent Schools to strictly monitor the absence of students and insist on health certificates issued by HMC and its affiliates in the case of absence.

Earlier this month, taking a serious view of student absenteeism, the Minister of Education and Higher Education, who is ex-officio chairman of the SEC, issued directives prescribing severe punishment for Independent School students who are absent for several school days on end without a valid reason.

The rules apply to students of grades four to 12 of all Independent Schools.
