Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar recently held the first outreach program of the 2014-2015 academic year, Ibtikar. The Ibtikar workshop, which focused on human-centered design and the impact of design and technology on the world, was the first in a series of three workshops designed to highlight the field of information systems to high school students in Qatar.
Over the coming months, Carnegie Mellon Qatar will offer a variety of additional outreach workshops related to its programs in biological sciences, business administration and computer science. The events will lead up to the university’s March 1 admissions deadline.
Admissions figures show that outreach programs have a significant impact on prospective student applications, with 44 percent of this year’s incoming students having participated in outreach programs.
Carnegie Mellon has always taken pride in leading outreach events that positively impact the local community. This tradition continues in Qatar with the steady growth of outreach programs that support the university’s ongoing commitment to the nation’s development.
Carnegie Mellon outreach programs are tailor-made for Qatar and the region and aim to help students prepare for admission into selective universities like the ones in Education City.
The outreach programs offered at Carnegie Mellon Qatar introduce students to the programs offered and offer insight into life at university through interactive activities and opportunities for prospective students to interact with Carnegie Mellon faculty and current students.
· The Biotechnology Explorer Program took place on November 15 and invites secondary school students to experience a laboratory experiment and to learn more about the biological sciences program at Carnegie Mellon Qatar.
· CS4Qatar is a series of workshops designed to inspire Qatar's youth to join the exciting field of computer science and become creators of innovations that will make a real impact. To address the challenge of attracting women into science and technology Carnegie Mellon launched CS4Qatar for Women a program which aims to broaden young women’s understanding of computer science, it will be held on November 22and CS4Qatar for Students aimed at all prospective students will take place on February 7, 2015.
· The Botball Education Robotics Program is one of Carnegie Mellon Qatar’s most successful outreach events. The program begins on January 30-31, 2015 with the final competition taking place on March 27. Botball is an internationally renowned hands-on learning experience in robotics designed to engage secondary school students in learning the practical applications of science, technology, engineering and math. The program introduces students to the field of computer science and robotics.
· Tajer- Investment for Qatar, is the latest edition to the outreach programs offered by Carnegie Mellon. Tajer takes place on February 14th 2015 and targets students interested in pursuing business administration. Through this outreach program, secondary school students are able to become traders for the day and learn about how financial markets work.
