Doha, 14 November 2012: Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) opened yesterday its annual celebration of World Diabetes Day. The theme for this year’s event is about protecting oneself from diabetes, highlighting ways to be healthy and prevent this condition.
HMC’s program activities for World Diabetes Day will last until 20 November. As part of the celebration, an awareness camp is being held at the entrance of Hamad General Hospital’s Outpatient Department to educate visitors and patients about diabetes. The camp will be open to the public until Thursday from 8:00am to 11:00am.
The camp was opened by Dr Muna Al Maslamani, Deputy Head of Internal Medicine, Dr Mahmoud Zirie, Head of HMC’s Diabetes and Endocrine Section, and other physicians and diabetes specialists at HMC. The camp offers a diabetes checkup free of charge for the public, and a nutritionist to advise people on proper foods that a diabetic patient should consume and foods that can help prevent the disease. There is also a specialist to advise on how diabetics can keep their feet healthy, and informative brochures on how people can live with the disease and ways to prevent obesity and diabetes in children.
A symposium also took place today at HMC’s Education Center that is aimed at updating the knowledge of healthcare professionals caring for people with diabetes, including doctors, pharmacists, nurses, nutritionists and health education specialists. The symposium was opened by Dr Mahmoud Zirie, and lectures were presented by Dr Momtani, an expert from Weill Cornell Medical College-Qatar who discussed diabetes as an international health concern; Dr Amin Jayyousi from HMC who discussed pregnancy diabetes; Dr Mahmoud Al Zyoud from HMC who discussed diabetes in children; and Maya Atani, a nutritionist who discussed obesity in children.
