Higher Internet penetration and its use by low-income workers and educational institutions will help foster freedom of information in Qatar, the Doha Centre for Media Freedom has said in
a statement.
The Doha Centre was encouraged by Qatar’s recently released ICT Landscape Report 2009, which reveals Internet penetration in the country stands at around 63 percent, since wider Internet use promotes freedom of information.
The Centre called upon ictQatar, to work closely with the local Internet service provider, Qatar Telecom, to reduce the cost of broadband Internet services and encourage its spread, especially among the “transient labour population”, while promoting Internet use at educational institutions.
The Doha Centre said with lower broadband Internet costs, “These workers will be able to access news from their native countries at a lower cost, thus promoting freedom of information in Qatar.”
