Hello to all our ILQ fashionistas as we welcome you to In The Glow. I remember loving fashion early on, from the runways of Fashion Week, to museums and exhibitions around the world, and the pages of Vogue, I have no doubt that fashion is the most powerful art there is.
I’m a personal stylist with a background in the business side of fashion, passionate about it all, and I’m here to guide you through what’s new in Qatar’s fashion scene with tips on how to keep well-dressed and stylish in this and every season.
In this first episode of In The Glow, I’m going to show you how to pack for a winter getaway. If you know the feeling of carrying a full suitcase, heavy with items, yet you barely use any of them and still can’t seem to piece together an outfit you like? Well, that’s pretty normal – why? Because most people don’t think before packing.
Style takes effort, effort takes planning
I believe that if you plan your packing properly, your trip is going to be that much better. So, before you start to put everything you see inside the suitcase, think about the purpose of your trip – how many days you’re going for, what the weather will be like, what activities do you have planned? This way you’ll have a better sense of how to choose your travel clothing.
Remember the essentials; in cold climates you need some essential pieces of clothing. Mine are: a warm coat, wool scarves, leather boots, and hats -I love hats- They’re versatile, classic, and fashionable, will keep you warm, and protect you from the elements.
For a winter holiday I also recommend you bring at least one pair of suede or leather pants; they’re as comfortable as jeans –but warmer – and I guarantee you will look very elegant. . The same goes for turtleneck blouses – but here’s a tip from a pro: in cold weather destinations, where you’re going from freezing outdoors, to overheated inside, always don a thinner blouse underneath in case you need to peel off some layers.
I also like it when most of pieces of clothing match,– this way you’ll be armed and ready for changing weather or any unwanted spills or stains. Let’s say you splash some coffee on your blouse and have to change it – or you sit on something and dirty your pants – it will be easier to have a back-up article of clothing at the ready. Plus, the more options you have, the more chances you’ll have to create new outfit combinations if you want!
Okay, so you’ve scoured your closet,, selected your best pieces, and they mix and match. Now comes something really cool: create your outfits, with all accessories, jewelry, purses, etc, lay them out or hang them up, and take some quick snaps, and save it as a “look-book” for your trip.
Trust me when I tell you this will make a huge difference – as it’s a heck of a time-saver. You won’t waste time during your trip thinking about what to wear and you’ll pack only what you’re really going to need and wear.
Now, make it fit!
It’s time to pack, and here are some quick and easy tips to help you fit everything in the suitcase.
1. Start by putting something inside your hat – it can be a piece of clothing or a scarf – and put it in the middle of your bag. Then, begin to put other items around it, to protect your hat.
2. Roll your clothes to save more space. If your suitcase has no big compartments, use shoe-bags to store your shoes, so they don’t come into direct contact with your clothes.
3. Challenge: try to take as few toiletries as possible. There are good travel-kit options on the market to help you save space, and I like soft toiletries bags because they’re easier to fit in your bag.
4. If your suitcase has different compartments, use them to store undergarments and smaller items like jewelry.
5. Lastly, save some room in case you plan to do some shopping while on holiday – you might not plan to, but it will happen I’m sure!
