French 'Spiderman' Alain Robert sets new record in Doha, Qatar

FAMED French free-climber Alain Robert, or "Spiderman" as he is widely known, has done it again. Robert climbed 300m up The Torch hotel in Doha yesterday, claiming to have set a new Guinness World Record. The Frenchman, who has been scaling tall buildings since the age of seven, took 75 minutes to complete the climb. Robert scaled Doha's tallest tower without a harness or safety ropes in front of a stunned crowd who watched from the ground below. Speaking ahead of the climb, Robert told The Gulf Times: “I feel like a child and I finally want to open my present: I want to climb The Torch.” The 50-year-old daredevil has now scaled more than 85 giant structures around the world, including the Empire State Building, Chicago’s Willis Tower and the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, as well as Doha’s La Cigale Hotel in 2008 and Sydney's 57-storey Lumiere skyscraper in 2010.
