Four dhows to be launched today

The Private Engineering Office in collaboration with Al Rayyan Media and Marketing Company will launch four dhows today at the Amiri dhow workshop near Doha Marriott hotel. Ali Saeed Al Kuwari, supervisor at the Private Engineering Office, said they spent six months working on these dhows under supervision of two Qatari engineers. The aim of the project was to keep traditional dhows as a significant part of Qatari heritage, he added. These dhows, two of which are classified as sambuk while the other two are shu’ai, will be used by guests at Souq Waqif hotels for tours. The new dhows add to the three dhows launched last year. The sambuk dhows have a length of 59ft while the shu’ai dhows are 60ft long each. Fifteen craftsmen worked oneach dhow which were made from wood imported from India. The opening ceremony starting at 8.30am will be attended by elders and guests. The event will feature traditional shows for children and performances by a band who will present activities of sayfe, al fajri and al naham. The Peninsula
