The Peninsula DOHA: The Supreme Council of Health (SCH) will launch tomorrow the second phase of its vaccination campaign against seasonal flu targeting children aged six months to five years. The vaccine will be administered to the targeted group at all primary healthcare centres in the country, the SCH said in a statement yesterday. All schoolchildren in Qatar had been targeted in the first phase of the campaign, which is still going on in a number of private, independent and semi-independent schools. The second phase is intended for younger children. Parents can get their children vaccinated at health centres during regular working hours - from 7am to 2pm and from 4pm to 7pm.Vaccination will take place throughout the week, except on Fridays and Saturdays. The campaign will be completed in two phases since children in the targeted age group will need two shots of the vaccine. Children above 5 years have been given only one dose. The plan is to complete the first shot in a week, while the second dose will be given after a month. Schoolchildren who fall in the targeted group have been advised to approach the health centres for the second shot of the vaccine, if they had the first injection in the schools. The SCH has reassured that the seasonal flu vaccine being administered to children was of high quality and very safe. The vaccine is recommended for all children except those with severe allergy to egg and high fever. Children with high body temperature can wait until their condition becomes normal. Only minor side effects have been reported after the vaccination. The authorities have urged all parents to take this opportunity to get their children vaccinated so that they can be protected against seasonal flu and related complications.
