Local flower shops are expecting huge sales on Valentine’s Day today, with some busy early this week taking orders and scheduling delivery.

“It’s early to say how much sales will increase, but we are loaded right now,” a local florist of a known flower shop in Doha told this daily yesterday.

Valentine’s Day has always been busy for the floral industry around the world and red roses, she said, remains the most sought-after on the day although other items such as chocolates and stuffed toys also witness huge sales.

“Other bestsellers in our shop are especially wrapped heart-shaped chocolates and stuffed toys with heart designs,” she said.

Roses, she said, are being sold for QR15 each but many customers buy them by the dozen which costs QR180. The cost, however, could go higher when the flowers are delivered or purchased online which has now become a trend, she added.

Another local florist confirmed that online flower business is doing well and has added a new dimension to floriculture.

“Customers find it more convenient to purchase online and we can deliver it within 24 hours,” he said, adding many flowers are sourced from Holland and other countries which make them expensive.

Though Valentine’s Day is not celebrated in this part of the world, this is the day when flower shops witness record sales apart from on other special occasions such as Mother’s Day.

“Valentine’s Day is not observed in Muslim countries like in the GCC region but some, mostly expatriates, still give flowers and gifts to their special someone on the day,” he said.

As Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday, some couples would find time to celebrate it either by going to movies or having a special dinner.

Special romantic dinners for two are offered in some plush restaurants, while many hotels have lined up Valentine’s Day promotions and packages which include dinner, spa treatment and overnight stay.
